Uniper official says NStream-2 to be finished despite new sanctions

MOSCOW, Mar 12 (PRIME) -- Possible sanctions against Russia’s Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline project can stop financing from the companies partners but will not stop the project, an official of Uniper said at a conference call on Tuesday.

“In case of a dramatic change of situation, be it change of the position of the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) or introduction of new sanctions, this in fact can bar us from continuing to finance the project but… we will not be concerned about the project, that the project can fail,” the official said.

“Russia gave us to know this very clearly, and also given the significant part of financing already sent to the project.”

U.S. Energy Secretary Rick Perry said on Monday that Washington is still considering additional sanctions against construction of Nord Stream-2.

The Nord Stream-2 project envisages construction of two lines of a natural gas pipeline with an annual capacity of up to 55 billion cubic meters, running from the Russian shore to Germany under the Baltic Sea. Russian gas giant Gazprom will implement the project together with Germany’s E.ON and BASF, Royal Dutch Shell, OMV, and Engie.
